Term 2 Summary

We start the term in the forest. Year 6 will be able to cook a meal on the fire, make dens and swings and develop their whittling skills.

In the afternoons, we will be studying history this term, rather than geography, and our topic will be ‘What was the impact of World War 2 on the people of Britain?’. We will be looking at the following issues: Investigating the causes of WW2; learning about the Battle of Britain; investigating the impact of the Blitz and evacuation on people’s lives; and evaluating the effectiveness of primary sources. We will be making our own mini models of an Anderson Shelter and combine this with our English unit, and write a set of instructions on how to make them.

In science, we will be looking at ‘Energy: light and reflection’. The key areas of study will be these: Proving that light travels in a straight line, children use this information to explain observations of reflection and shadows. Pupils investigate the effect of moving an object away from the surface it casts a shadow on and the relationship between the incoming and reflected rays on a mirrored surface. Exploring real uses of mirrors allows children to apply what they have learned about light throughout the unit.

In PE, we will be learning about the generic skills involved in Invasion games, and doing some gymnastics.

In Computing we will be learning how to be alert online, recognising what’s safe and what isn’t

Term 2 Jigsaw theme – Dreams and Goals

Our whole school Jigsaw theme this term is ‘Dreams and Goals’ and lessons are delivered in an age-and-stage appropriate way for each year group from EYFS through to Year 6. This theme aims to help children think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, what personal strengths are and how to overcome challenges via team-work skills and tasks. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment and success. They will have opportunities to share their aspirations, explore the dreams and goals of others in different cultures/countries and think about their own dreams for the world.

If you have any further questions regarding our ‘Dreams and Goals’ Jigsaw unit, please contact your child’s class teacher using the admin@baileyscourt.com school email address.

It will be a busy term leading up to Christmas. We will have our annual carol concert, be completing Christmas crafts and even get to make a biscuit house in DT.

Term 1 Summary

Welcome to year 6! We hope you had a wonderful Summer holiday! We can’t wait to share all of our amazing learning with you!

Year 6 will have a busy start to the year. During week 2 we will be heading to Kilve Court for the week on Year 6 camp.
In our first geography unit, we will be looking at the global population. We will be looking at these key questions:
How is the global population changing?
What are birth and death rates?
Why do people migrate?
How is climate change impacting the population?
How is population impacting our environment?
We will investigate why certain parts of the world are more populated than others; exploring birth and death rates; discussing social, economic and environmental push and pull factors; learning about the population in Britain and its impacts.
In science this term we will be looking at classifying a range of animals both big and small. We will build on our knowledge of different animal groups and look at specific factors that categorise animals. Children will broaden their knowledge of how vertebrates, invertebrates, plants and micro-organisms are grouped using shared characteristics. They discover how Carl Linnaeus developed the Linnaean and binomial systems for classifying and naming living things. Pupils use and produce classification keys to sort and identify organisms.
In our English lessons we will focus on the book Alone on the WIde Wide Sea by Michael Monpergo.
When six-year-old Arthur is shipped to Australia after the Second World War, he loses everything he knows. Subjected to brutal hardship on a working farm before finding a home with the eccentric Aunty Megs, Arthur is eventually called back to the sea.
Now Arthur has built a yacht for his daughter, Allie, who is determined to sail to England to find her father’s long-lost sister. Will love stretch across time and oceans and reveal how Arthur’s life began?
We will be visualising and drawing characters  and writing character descriptions and narratives based on the book.
In PE this term, we are lucky to be having martial art lessons led by Matt and sport sessions during our Enrichment time.
